What is Kadena Community Edition?

Kadena Community Edition (KCE) is the Kadena blockchain as it runs today. It is the same chain, the same KDA and the same Pact smart contracts, maintained by the community since Kadena LLC wound down in late 2025.

What happened in 2025

  1. October 21, 2025. Kadena LLC, the company that built Kadena, announced it was ceasing business operations and active maintenance of the blockchain. It said the network would keep running under miners and the community.
  2. November 6, 2025. Former Kadena engineers and community developers published chainweb-node 3.0, the first Community Edition release.
  3. November 8, 2025. The community release took over at block 6,335,858. Miners and mining pools moved to it, and it became the Kadena network in use today.
  4. Late 2025. Release 3.1 replaced fixed upgrade dates with miner voting, so future network upgrades are switched on by miners.
  5. August 2026. Release 3.2 upgraded to Pact 5.4.1, added a new testnet and let nodes keep a much smaller database. Work on quantum-safe accounts is under way.

What changed, and what did not

Unchanged: account balances, ordinary user accounts and their keys, deployed Pact contract code, the 20-chain proof-of-work design and the KDA emission schedule paid to miners. Accounts controlled by your own keys carried over as they were.

Changed: the Platform Share and namespace keysets moved from Kadena LLC to a new community keyset, the network uses community-run bootstrap nodes, and the code and its dependencies are published by the kda-community organization on GitHub.

Questions people ask

Is Kadena Community Edition a new coin?

No. It is the same Kadena chain and the same KDA. The community release continued the existing chain from November 2025, so balances, accounts and Pact contracts carried over unchanged. Price and data sites still track it as KDA. Several large exchanges delisted KDA after the October 2025 announcement, so check whether yours supports it.

Do I need to do anything with the KDA in my wallet?

If your KDA sits in a wallet where you control the keys, such as Ecko Wallet, there is nothing to move or claim. Your account is the same on the community chain. If your KDA was on an exchange, check that exchange's own notices about KDA support.

Who maintains Kadena Community Edition?

Former Kadena engineers and community developers publish the node software and libraries under the kda-community organization on GitHub. Since release 3.1, future network upgrades are activated by miner vote rather than on a fixed date.

Is Kadena still proof of work?

Yes. Kadena Community Edition keeps Chainweb: 20 chains mined in parallel with proof of work, and smart contracts written in Pact.

Is Kadena Nexus part of Kadena LLC?

No. Kadena Nexus is an independent community project and is not affiliated with Kadena LLC. It works alongside the kda-community developers and the community DAO, building tools that support Kadena Community Edition and collaborating with them on new projects.
